Responses to Perspectives “On Theme and Symbol” by Flannery O'Connor, found in the Bedford Literary Textbook pg. 398, is a Perspective piece on herself and her work. The question arising from this piece is: "Why is a 'statement' inadequate to convey the meaning of a story?"  To understand that better, one must know the context from which the question derives. The article Flannery wrote was her reflection on how theme and symbolism work in her stories. She explains in the essay that a simple sentence or thesis statement can't completely summarize or elaborate a short story, for a short story's purpose is to expand upon an idea. She also elaborated on the concept of symbolism by explaining her process of writing, and how she herself didn't see the symbols till much later in the writing process. An Evaluation of O'Connor's Writing Flannery O'Connor was an incredible author, unique in her writing style, with violence, dark humor, but not in the spirit of bitterness, rather in pursuit of pointing an audience towards a greater revelation, which is mankind's utter failures and hypocrisy, and their need for grace. Throughout her work, there are twists, turns, shocking reveals, and humanly flawed characters many can identify and connect with. She uses a wide span of literary tools, such as foreshadowing, irony, symbolism, and her writing style is one of showing, not telling. All of this she does with talent and genius, for she is an incredible author unlike any others especially during her time. Who is Flannery O'Connor?   Mary Flannery O'Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia on March 25 th in the year 1925. Her parents were devout Catholics, Regina Cline and Edward F. Connor. Flannery attended a private Catholic school until her parents moved to Milledgeville in 1938 due to her father's health. There Flannery went to school at the Peabody Laboratory School. When she was fifteen, her father died of lupus, which was devastating to her. She stayed in Milledgeville and attended Georgia State College for Women in a three-year program, became editor for their literary magazine the Corinthian . Flannery earned a scholarship to the State University of Iowa for journalism, but she eventually changed to creative writing where she found her strong suit. Things were looking good for her.
